Yercaud is one of the most well known hill stations of Tamil Nadu, at a distance of 22 km from the city of Salem. These hills form a part of the Servarayan Range in the Eastern Ghats and are situated at an altitude of 1515 m above sea level. The area of these hills is also popular for coffee plantations and orange groves, along with an orchidarium, which is run by the Botanical Survey of India. The highest point at these hills is the site of the Servarayan Temple, due to which, these hills are also sometimes referred to as Shevaroy Hills. It is also home to the Murugar group of temples. The place also has a nearby lake, which is famous as a boating site, and also for its gardens.

"A lovely Hill station not very far from the Hot & Dusty plains."

Hardly 30kms from Salem in Tamilnadu on and H-7 is Yercaud on the eastern ghats. This place may not catch the imagination of many travelers as it is hardly known to many. I had also not imagined that it would be such a cool place.
However one should remember that there is not much of activity and within two days you will be exhausted of visiting all the tourist attraction listed there. Most of the spots are within 4-5kms from the center of the town I. E Yercaud lake.
There are about half a dozen big hotels and resorts where good accommodation is available. Local sight seeing a cab is a must as there is no public transport to these destinations. The notable locations suggested by the locals are 1) Ladies seat 2) gents seat & Pagoda point which are nothing but the edge of the mountain from where you get a birds view of Salem town. In Yercaud lake you can hire a paddle boat or pedal boat and go around the lake for 30mts. A speed boat ride for 10mts costs about 450/- plus tips. Plant lovers can visit the rose garden and some of the nurseries en route to the above mentioned places.
There are three temples which can be visited by the devoted of which one is inside a small cave but very poorly maintained. It appears the state tourism department has not much focus on this holiday spot. Except for coffee plantations owned by private companies the entire Hills is with thick vegetation and looks like a forest with very few people moving around.
Life comes to stand still after 6. 00pm by which time the temperature starts dipping.
As regards food like any tourist destination the place is filled with small eateries and a few restaurants. Almost all the restaurants serve Veg & non-veg hence the staunch veggies would find it difficult to eat outside. They should be happy with the food offered at hotel/resort they are staying.
There is one notable joint for the N-Veg's called "Sweet Rascal", It is actually run by a local who has a passion for gardening with several dogs both friendly and ferocious and birds. Food is prepared and served only to those with prior table reservation. The menu and quantity is to be decided at the time of booking as it is like homely food.
This place is not suggested for children as they may get bored within 24hrs and the next day they may not have much to do.

Yercaud in the Servarayan Hills (Shevaroy Range) of Salem District. It is a quite pleasant hill resort in Tamil Nadu. The name is derived from the Picturesque Yeri (Lake) once surrounded by Kadu (forest). Yercaud is a Beautiful hill station with a pleasant cool climate. Yercaud's temperature never rises above 30 C or falls below 13 C. This is one hill station where one does not feel the biting cold of winter. With such a salubrious climate, Yercaud can be visited round the year. It is 30 Km from Salem and is the least expensive hill station in India.

"Other way to reach heaven"

Yercaud - located to the north of Salem, Tamil Nadu. Whenever we travel towards Yercaud we go only through the Hasthampatti- Korimedu- Yercaud. Even though the views from the hill road is good there is much traffic and its exploited. We forget that there is another way to reach Yercaud which is beautiful and majestic while travelling through a 6 feet wide road. Route map is as follows Salem - Valasaiyur- Kuppanur - Yercaud. It's the road which is less taken by the visitors. We locals travel mostly by this road enjoying the fresh air and making stoppage at any place we need. It goes through the coffee estates and it's not been much exploited I recommend tourist to try this route at least once!!!

PS: Road is closed from 9. 00 PM to 6. 00 AM. So please plan accordingly. Also keep a spare tyre as there would be no shop found in this way.

It's one of the best and coolest place in Salem. An awesome experience to me when I had gone to the Yercaud Hills. I visited many places in Yercaud - Boating in Lake, Ladies point, Gents point, Flower Garden, Zoo, Gardens etc. Roads to the hill is very clear and easy to drive bikes. While bike ride to the Yercaud is very excellent.

Maybe not a nice time to visit. The place was dry, except for the lake. The viewpoints are ill maintained. The guy outside the lake writing on rice grain is a charm.

I had a wonderful experience in Yercaud, the climate was really awesome. There are various sightseeing in Yercaud like Lady's seat, Gents seat, Children's seat you can have a full view of the city from this point. Great foods and snacks. Shevaroys hotel serves good buffet, totally it was an affordable hill station visit. Must place to visit in Tamil Nadu during summer vacation.
