If you set out early and are lucky enough to miss traffic, Mysore is about three hours away from Bangalore. Head next to the more exotic Coorg and go back home with a bag of freshly ground coffee, pepper or cardamom from the marketplaces.

Drive along the Coromandel Coast to see ancient heritage sites, beaches and waterfalls. HolidayIQ reviewer Balaji says, “Chennai to Pondicherry is a 140-km-drive. Drive on the beautiful East Coast Road (ECR ) and you can reach Pondicherry in solid 80 minutes! There's a toll on the outskirts of Chennai. The road is smooth without any bumps for the full stretch.”

HolidayIQ reviewer Amit Rao adds, Pondicherry-Villupuram-Trichy-Madurai-Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari is the only best route. It will take around 8 hours at a stretch. Recommended that you halt and go. Start in the afternoon and make a halt at Madurai.”

Route: NH45 and NH7

Adds HolidayIQ reviewer Ajeet Deshmukh, “The roads in Kerala are excellent and even though most of the travelling is through the hills, the roads were really good; you don't get tired while driving. As everywhere it's a single lane road, it takes time to reach the destination but I truly enjoyed driving in Kerala.”

Route: NH7 and via Alleppey-Madurai Road
