As the Buddhist calendar begins, the Matho monastery gets ready for the annual two-day festival of Matho Nagrang and it truly is a one of kind experience. The picturesque views, sights and winding roads of Ladakh is a travellers haven.  Read on as HolidayIQ travellers tell you about top five amazing experiences in this magical land.

1. Experience the magic of Matho Nagrang festival

"The location of Lamayuru monastery is spectacular, among mountains having the shape of a moonland. I was accompanied by two young boys from the monastery and was impressed by their honesty and high moral values," shares Pallav.

And while you are at it, do not miss to visit the Matho monastery where the world famous two-day annual Matho Nagrang festival is held. Witness the moment two oracles emerge from an isolated two- month long meditation to predict the future. Watch the spectacular masked dancers perform wearing multicoloured silk robes with brocades. The masks represent various Gods and Goddesses and are a true treat for the soul.

2. The surreal Pangong Lake

HolidayIQ Traveller Monica Rai from Mumbai shares, “Pangong Lake looks different in different seasons. In winters it is frozen from November end to April. The colours are varied from season to season. It runs through 7km before it joins the border between India and China.

All along the lake, there are places to stay, both affordable and expensive. One of the best part for me was to find some rare species of birds in & around the lake. In April, one can see the black-necked crane, which is a rarity otherwise.”

3. Go on a ride on the unique bactrian camel

HolidayIQ Traveller Suriya Juneja from Dehradun shares, “It is best for nature lovers and to enjoy the beauty of Magnificent Great Himalayas and mountain desert. The Nubra valley is good for its white sand dunes and double hump camels. Drive through the snow-clad mountains.

Don't expect any malls or shopping areas, except for local Ladakhi products. Start early and reach the destination by noon, to have a glimpse of the surrounding area. Walk through the mountain trails in the evening.”

4. The Mysterious Baralacha La for guaranteed goosebumps

Situated in Zanskar region, this pass is so dangerous that it remains open only for a few months every year. Of late, the tale of a cannibal spirit roaming around the empty shed of Shaheed Smarak Bhawan is gaining popularity and people don't visit this place at night.

HolidayIQ Traveller Shefali Rattan shares “Crossed this pass on our way to Leh from Manali during sunset. The Tibetan flags, view from this place, the silence, winds, everything is absolutely mindblowing. You can stop there for few minutes, good for photography

HolidayIQ Traveller Sunny Kapoor from New Delhi shares, “The city offers a great destination for bikers. You can rent your bikes and travel to some of the most beautiful places in the India - pristine lakes, desert mountains, world's highest roads etc.

Local food is average though the place has a lot of German and French eating joints. The best way to visit the place is on a bike during June-Aug. One should travel from Manali to Leh and then visit Pangong. Advice to travellers doing biking is to buy protective gear since roads are very tough.”
