5 Reasons Why You’ll Instantly Fall in Love With Kerala

Do you know of many places in India’s that’re called God’s own country? If your answer is no, you probably know that Kerala is the place we’re talking about and it completely justifies the tag. A melting pot of a wide array of attractions like nature’s very best in magical hill stations, breathtaking beaches, rare and fascinating wildlife and tranquil backwaters, to being historically and culturally significant owing to the majestic forts and the exquisite temples, Kerala truly has it all.

This winter, Kerala tourism gave us glimpse of a Kerala never seen before - exclusively for a few lucky members of the HolidayIQ travel community through the #GoKerala contest. We’ve already covered our travellers’ journey in great detail in our previous blogs but we realised you couldn’t really get enough of this wonderful state and decided to spark your wanderlust further. Know why Kerala is worth all this love! Experience the magical journey of our travellers.

1. The Serene Spell of the Backwaters!

Looking for a place where you can combine the best of nature and luxury while searching for that elusive peace of mind? What if we told you what you will experience at the kerala backwaters will be a bona fide once-in-a-lifetime experience?

From enjoying stupefying scenery with the backdrop of painting esque sunsets in Kumarakom to taking the exceptional backwater cruises of Alappuzha, there’s a lot you can do at the backwaters including being treated like absolute royalty.

HolidayIQ reviewer Vinod Nair says, “Alleppey or Alappuzha is known as Venice of the east for a solid good reason. The backwaters here and the houses surrounding it with a laid back atmosphere is apt for a wonderful relaxed sun soaking holiday. The wind just flows right here not too much and brings in the whole atmosphere to the right ambience. Live here for few days and get completely disconnected from the concrete jungles.”

2. Channel your inner wild child!

Fancy spotting a rare migratory bird like a spot billed pelican or prefer watching a herd of elephants on a river bank jostling for water? For anything that you want from your wildlife experience, Kerala with its staggering diversity has it covered.

Discover the nature lover in you by taking an early morning boat ride along the Periyar river or just lead your expedition into the mystifying Silent Valley National Park- the choice is entirely yours. Just don’t forget to get back to basics and become one with the nature.

HolidayIQ reviewer Mamta Narula says, “We visited lion safari park. After seeing Nayyer dam you can go for this Safari. This is open till 5 pm only. Boat ride of 5 minutes from the registration counter will take you to the safari park. From here they take you in a bus to see the lions. We were thrilled to see the lions up so close, just outside the bus window. They seemed unaffected by all our excitement. It was very nice experience.”

3.  Of drive-in beaches and silken sunsets!

Do you love spotless beaches and sunsets that remind you of saturated oil paintings? Even if your answer is no, Kerala will make you fall in love with both!

The many shades of sunlight filtering through the jumbled Chinese fishing nets will make your submission easier. To top it off, Kovalam has wonderful beaches like the lighthouse beach that will spellbind the poetic soul in you. If nothing works, it’s not that easy to resist the longest drive-in beach in Asia, the Muzhappilangad beach, with options like being able to ride an ATV and much more!

HolidayIQ reviewer Elsie Gabriel says, “Incredible India. Ever heard of a drive in beach in India? Well you can enjoy this privilege, this magnificent clean beach here in Kannur Kerala. We did a few rounds on the quad bikes and collected so many shells and starfish. Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach is a beach surrounded by greenery. ”

4. Of heavenly hill stations and stunning waterfalls!

Want to get enchanted by the lush tea plantations of Munnar and the surreal valleys of Wayanad or lose yourself in the musical roar of the Athirapally falls- take your pick.

Drive along the serpentine, clean roads leading up to the calm, cool magnificence of Idukki or just laze back in a treehouse with a direct view of the beautiful waterfalls, anything you do will transport you to an ethereal realm.

HolidayIQ reviewer Elsie Gabriel says, One thousand feet above sea level the amazing Athirappilly Falls is known as the Niagara Falls of India, the most famous waterfall of Kerala, is situated at Athirappilly. Very short drive from Athirapally, it is nestled close to dense green forests which are a sight to behold.

5. The architecture and splendour of majestic forts!

What’s any place without its own glorious history and culture? Kerala is home to the glorious Bekal fort which, spread over 40 acres, is the largest fort in Kerala and was constructed in the 17h century purely for defence purposes.
If this is too mainstream for you, go off the tourist brochures with the Edakkal Caves. Situated about  25 km from Kalpetta, they’re a group of two natural caves and are considered the earliest human settlement in Wayanad. Ready to go back in time?

HolidayIQ reviewer Shehalata jain says, “Bekal fort is very near to city Bekal, and it also has a beautiful top view of Pallikere Beach. The fort is well preserved fort by archaeological survey of India and it has a history with military camp of tipu sultan. The fort was quite big so it takes time to complete, and also it's a mix of green lawn and brown bricks.”
