They say the journey is the reward. Explore the USA by road and you’ve hit the jackpot. This is a country that will help you come out of your comfort zone and make you go the extra mile, literally!

Rent a vehicle (your Indian driving license comes in handy in the US), set out on the road and see the hidden gems of this amazing country for a journey you’ll remember for years.

The broad roads are laced with picturesque views, no doubt, owing to the coastlines, national parks and prismatic landscape. Hear what our HolidayIQ travellers have to say about how a road trip across this magical country was mind-blowing!

1. Overseas Highway: Florida

The Overseas Highway, popularly known as ‘The Highway that Goes to Sea’ covers turquoise waters which separates the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. A sweeping series of 42 bridges, this highway also includes the iconic ‘Seven Mile’.

This 182-kilometre journey has roads fringed with native flora and an incredible line-up of fauna, palms and retro motels (yes, like in the movies). You could start your USA trip from Florida City or Miami and head south to Key West!

HolidayIQ traveller Fabiha Khalid says “Miami is buzzing with all sorts of people. The weather is beautiful and bright. Go along the ocean drive. Visit the Biscayne Bay for some awesome views. There's something for everyone in Miami.”

2. Pacific Coast Highway: California

Road trip your way along the West Coast on the surreal Pacific Coast Highway. You can hit popular places in the States like San Francisco, Monterey, Los Angeles and Malibu, to name a few.

You must drive over the spell bounding Bixby Bridge as it’s one of the most famous and photographed bridges on the West Coast. Also, one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world.

HolidayIQ traveller Apoorva Somaiah says “If you want to experience the American coast at its best, the road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway is one of the best ways to do that. Threading through this gorgeous stretch with a stunning view of the ocean runs the Highway 1 that takes you through Big Sur.”

3. Blue Ridge Parkway: Virginia and North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway breezes its way through forested peaks to a few of the oldest mountains in the world. 755 kilometres of complete lush and green forestry can lead you to the famed Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

The hue throughout the landscape is painted in flaming shades of red, yellow and orange. The terrific imagery of the scenery will make you feel like you’re looking at a postcard come alive!

HolidayIQ traveller Crish Sequeira says “Wow, what a beautiful drive! Vivid hues across the landscape made for stunning, surreal views - no wonder this is known as one of the most beautiful drives in the USA. This journey will forever be imprinted in my memory.”

4. Route 89: Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona

The Route 89, also known as the National Park to Park Highway, US, starts in Flagstaff, Arizona and navigates north through Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

This astounding highway passes 150 towns, cities and seven national parks including the legendary ‘Grand Canyon’ and ‘Yellowstone National Park’. So, don’t forget to carry your camera!

HolidayIQ traveller Prabir Bose says “One must visit the Grand Canyon because - i) it is the one of Seven Natural Wonders of the World ii) there are no canyons in the world like this! Had an amazing time on the skywalk by walking on the glass bridge suspended 1220 meters above the Colorado River.”
