A Foodie’s Guide to the Coastal Goodness of Kerala

By now, we know you’ve been with us throughout the HolidayIQ and Kerala Tourism’s #GoKerala contest in which 5 lucky couples were taken on an all expenses paid trip around Kerala, allowing them to see Kerala in a new light.

After sharing their journey and best pictures with you, we finally have something that is  completely different from everything else you’ve had the pleasure to see before. Kerala has a very unique cuisine and our travellers got a chance to relish some of the best food in the state. If you’ve ever had a thing for coastal cuisine, Kerala is heaven for you.

Our travellers were fully aware of this wonderful opportunity as they went ahead and gorged on some authentic Kerala food. We shared their wonderful culinary experience and then some more through this post.

1. Elasadya at the Pranavam Homestay Wayanad

If you’re looking for a truly homely experience in Kerala, savouring a homemade traditional meal is something you can never go wrong with. One of the best places where you can do that is at the Pranavam Homestay in Wayanad. The hospitality along with the homely food will give you the best experience of a common Kerala household.

HolidayIQ traveller Victor Ferns says, “Nothing like home cooked food and that too in the lap of luxury in Wayanad. Mr and Mrs Ravindran, the owners, are so welcoming. The food is served with love and respect. Mrs Ravindran also gave you a cuisine demo of pineapple pachadi a vegan dish of par boiled pineapple.”

HolidayIQ traveller Snehalata Jain gives you an insight into the homestay.

2. Coastal Cuisine at the Spice Route Houseboat!

What better than matching the steam rising from your breakfast to the morning mist of the backwaters of Alleppey? Absolutely nothing. Fall in love with nature as you enjoy your sumptuous breakfast. Follow it up with the yummiest coastal delicacies while being surrounded with nature’s beauty.

HolidayIQ traveller Deepa nair says, “Food was excellent. Both veg and non veg was there with the fresh catch of the day. Just get into the houseboat and relax yourself and enjoy the beautiful backwaters. Highly recommended.”

HolidayIQ traveller Kanishka Batra talks about the food at the Spice Route Houseboats in this video review,

3. Munroe island Toddy tapping and fish farms

Munroe island, in itself is a wonderful cultural experience. What makes it better however, is the unique experience of being able to witness how the locals prepare the heavenly palm wine, known as Toddy. Apart from learning how it is made, you can also try your hand at fishing and enjoy a raw experience.

HolidayIQ traveller Ramit says, “With a few resorts & homestays on the island- there are basic amenities available for lunch/stay. Munroe farm is an active farm with several pond of fishes/prawns. One can also indulge in the Toddy tapping experience.”

He also took this video review of the fish farm.

4. SM Street, Kozhikode for authentic local edibles

Also known as the ‘Sweetmeat street’, this place is an absolute heaven for those who’re looking forward to getting anything- from spices and sweets to local delicacies. Don’t forget stopping by the Malabar Halwa Stores to get yourself some special Calicut halwa.

Another speciality here is the variety of chips you can get in shops dating to as early as 1920s. From crispy tapioca to spicy banana- you’ll truly be spoilt for choices. If you’re still hungry, there’s delicious street food you can gorge on.

HolidayIQ reviewer Victor Ferns shot this video review at the SM street:

Here’s another video review, shot by Vinod nair, that tells you more about what to buy here.

Loved what you saw? If you’re someone who loves coastal cuisine, Kerala is a heaven for you. Watch this space for more exhilarating stuff!
