During the British rule in India, these areas served as a hunting ground. Kanha housed a large population of Swamp deer. However, hunting here was prohibited in the year 1931 due to heavy decline in the population of deer. It was after this that development of Kanha as a wildlife sanctuary started and today it is thriving.
