The journey to Ooty from Bangalore is full of scenic views, which gets even better as you approach the hill station.
It goes through Bandipur National park which then turns into Mudumalai National park once you cross the Karnataka Border and enter Tamil Nadu. The last part of the stretch is the highlight of the journey, where one can find 36 hair pin bends, cutting through the hills.
One can enjoy the famous Bandipur Safari along the way, but it should always be planned well in advance due to the rush over there.
Important Info: You will not be allowed to cross the Bandipur region via road from 8 p. M in the evening to 6 a. M in the morning. So the journey should be planned accordingly.

We had a good experience by travelling in a car so that we can see as many places as we can but one thing is we had visited in rainy season whenever we had to stop at any place we need not have to ask others to stop, never go short way.

We left Bangalore at 5. 30 am. There was no traffic in getting to the Mysore Road, and except for a halt to fuel up, we reached Mysore Road within half an hour. We took the normal route via Channapatna, Krishnagiri and Mandya and then turned left towards Ooty a little before Mysore. Road conditions were good throughout. The best part of the journey is when you cross the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka, which continues as Mudumalai National Park once you enter Tamil Nadu. This stretch is beautiful. If you're lucky enough, you get to see lots of animals on this route. We saw sloth bears, peacocks, bison, some elephants, including a huge tusker. This stretch is fairly long, and there are speed breakers virtually every 100 metres or so, to protect the animals. Hence, the average speed comes down once you enter the forest area. Once you cross the national parks, you start the upward climb to Ooty. This stretch is extremely winding, with 36 hair-pin bends. The turns are very sharp and steep, making it difficult and dangerous to overtake others. We have a 2 year old kid, and he got nauseous on this stretch. I would advise travellers to drive peacefully on this stretch, and not try to drive too fast. The scenery on either side of the road is beautiful though, and as you ascend, you can literally see the clouds coming closer and closer. Overall, the drive is very enjoyable. We took about 7 hours to reach Ooty, including a breakfast break and 3 breaks when our kid got nauseous.
On the way back, the route is almost the same, except that you take a different route while descending from Ooty. The descent is about 10 km longer than the ascent. While the number of hair pin bends is far lesser, the road is narrower, and there are a lot of turns, which means the average speed comes down quite a bit. We again drove through the Mudumalai and Bandipur National Parks, and having left Ooty at about 1 pm, it was nearly 5 pm by the time we reached the junction of the Bangalore-Mysore Highway. Mandya to Maddur was a breeze. After Maddur, we got caught in a very bad traffic jam, which started a little before Channapatna, and continued all the way till Bangalore. Having reached Maddur at about 7 pm, we reached the nice Road exit only by 10. 30 pm.
For travellers returning to Bngalore on a Sunday, I would strongly recommend that you leave Ooty before 9 am. I am told that the traffic issue starts on Sunday evening, when tourists return to Bangalore from Ooty, Coonoor, Mysore, Coorg and Wayanad on the same route. Our return journey took us about 10 hours. The best way to avoid this is to return to Bangalore on a Saturday. I have returned to Bangalore fromCoorg on a Saturday, and the traffic is fairly peaceful.

We visited Ooty in the latter half of December, and stayed at the Sterling Elk Hill Resort. Travelling with my wife, my kid and my parents, we were looking for 3 things from the hotel - proximity to tourist spots in Ooty, Play area for the kid and clean, comfortable rooms.

While going from Bangalore we have taken 36 hair bend route which was scary and beautiful. While coming back we have taken the Bus route which is long and safe. Going by car experience is really good because you can see Bandipur and Mudumalai park on the way.
