The state capital of Mizoram, home to important government offices, the State Assembly and Civil Secretariat, Aizawl is one of the most important cities of the Northeast. Perched on high hills, it abounds in natural beauty with an endless variety of landscape, hilly terrains, meandering streams, deep gorges, and a rich wealth of flora and fauna. Aizawl is inhabited mainly by the Mizo tribal people, who have a distinctive culture of their own.
The city has the Lengpui Airport, the only one in the northeast apart from Guwahati, Assam. Over recent years, Aizawl has become one of the most coveted travel destinations in India, with its scenic landscape, monuments and memorials connected with legends and folklore. Being the largest city in the state, and the head quarter of Aizawl District, it is also a political, religious and cultural hub of the Mizo people.
The centre of activity in Aizawl is the Bara Bazar, the shopping hub for clothes, accessories and any other household or commercial goods. Here, you will see women clad in colourful puanchei (traditional attire of Mizo women) standing behind stalls selling anything from clothes to vegetables. A must visit is the Luangmual Handicrafts Centre, where you can buy hand-made goods such as 'khumbeu', the ceremonial bamboo hat made of waterproof 'hnahthial' leaves. The Mizoram State Museum at Mc Donald Hill is another main attraction, as is the Mini Zoo. Among scenic outdoors attractions are the Durtlang Hills, the picnic spot at Berawtlang Tourist Complex, Bung, the Pukzing Caves, Tamdil Lake and Rungdil Lake.
The food habits here are very basic. Most of the food is cooked in less oil, if none at all. Bamboo is an important ingredient in all Mizo food. Most people are non-vegetarians here and fish and meat are a part of almost every meal.
