The
Ajanta Caves,
situated at a distance of about 40 km from Jalgaon, are one of the most outstanding
Buddhist caves in the whole of India
and depict the story of Buddhism, spanning a period from 200 BC to 650 AD. Counted
amongst the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Maharashtra, the 30 caves at Ajanta were built as secluded retreats for the Buddhist
monks, who taught and performed rituals in the Chaityas and Viharas, the
ancient seats of learning and nerve - centres of the Buddhist cultural movement.
Ajanta Caves were discovered in 1819
AD and some of the paintings discovered inside them were made between 5th and
7th century AD. Almost each and every painting found inside the premises of
these caves centres around Buddhist religion- some of them portray Lord Buddha,
some Bodhisattvas, while some other are based on the Jataka tales and incidents
from the life of Lord Buddha.
Situated far away from the city, these caves were built in the middle of a huge
rock. All of the caves have been carved with precision and adorned with
exquisite architectural details. The sculptures seen at the Ajanta Caves
seem to be the result of the skilled craftsmanship of the people at the time.
Beautiful caves, hailed for their artistic splendour and grandeur, the
world-renowned Ajanta
Caves are simply a
destination worth visiting on your next trip out of town! |
