Narnala is another historically famous fort which is situated in the deep and dense forest land on the Satpura hills. There are two other forts in this forest - Jafarabad Fort on the east, and Teliyagad Fort on the west, with Narnala fort in the centre. Other important forts here include Akot Fort and Akola Fort.
The forested area around Akola is known as the Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary and is a continuation of the Melghat Tiger Reserve. The animals you can see here are leopard, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, porcupines and several species of birds.
Akola is also a pilgrimage hub for worshippers of Lord Shiva. Every year, during 'Shravan' time, flocks of people visit the Raj Rajeshwar Temple. Among other religious centres in Akola are Narsingh Maharaj Mandir, Atishay kshatra Shri Antariksh Parshvanath Jain Temple, and the Birla Mandir.
Akola is one of the leading industrial as well as agricultural districts of Maharashtra. Akola city has a prominent industrial zone on the outskirts known as Akola MIDC Industrial Area. It also has the famed Agricultural University, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth
, which attracts students from all over for its Agricultural and
Industrial courses. The chief agricultural crops produced in the area
are cotton, soyabean, jowar, wheat, sunflower, and peanut.
Akola
also has a rich historical, cultural, and political background. In
ancient times it constituted a very important province of the Vidharba
kingdom. It was later an important stronghold of the Marathas. However,
it was annexed by the British East India Company in 1803, in the Battle
of Adgaon. Several historical forts and monuments are reminiscent of
its glorious past under the Marathas.
