Ambikapur is a small quiet town in the Surguja district of Chhattisgarh, overlapping the south-eastern parts of the Vindhyachal-Baghelkhand region of peninsular India. The district is bordered by Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh and is criss-crossed by several rivers, namely, Kanhar, Moran, Rihand and Mahan. It is believed that Lord Rama had visited Surguja during his fourteen years of exile and a number of places here are named after him, his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita. Most of the tribal population here consider themselves to be descendants of the Pandavas. Ambikapur abounds in natural products like coal, bauxite, and forest products. Agriculture (mainly paddy) constitutes the other main source of income. Of late, the railway network and number of educational institutions have expanded here. This has led to an influx of population and commercial activity.
