The tiny town of Anantnag
is in the district by the same name in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of six
districts that are within the southern and southern western area and is
referred as the gateway of Kashmir
Valley. The Anantnag
district name has been documented as coming from the great 'Ananta Naga' or
Lord Vishnu's serpent also considered as a symbol of eternity. Another version
considers that 'Anant' or numerous in Sanskrit and 'Naga' meaning springs in
the local dialect, is perfect for this place. With innumerable sacred springs
specifically the Salak Nag, Malik Nag and Nag Bal are worshipped on special
days.
The ancient city of Anantnag has been traced
back to 5000 BC as a commercial town. Entwined in mythological stories, it was
also known as Kashyapteshwara, with links to the Rishi Kashyapa. With
innumerable fresh water and sulphur springs, dotted with ancient temples and
exquisite natural beauty, Anantnag is a must see.
The world famous shrine of Hazarat
Baba Hyder Rashi is situated in the Jamia Masjid, Islamabad at Anantnag, where people of all
religions come and pray in harmonious unanimity.
The special Anantnag Bhawan
Complex encompasses seven temples - two temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, a
single Radha-Krishna temple, Ganesha temple, Durga temple, Hanuman and one Sita
Ram temple.
Apart from being an ancient
pilgrimage center, Anantnag has started to develop as a center of adventure
sports and eco tourism. Verdant green forest areas, ancient historical sites,
natural scenic beauty and serene ambience has made it a sought after
destination. With increased security and better government support, adventure
and eco tourism has increased substantially in the recent years. |
