About Asansol Tourism
The heart of Ranigunj Coalfields, Asansol is a
major coal mining town and an industrial hub in the Bardhaman district in West Bengal. It is also the second largest
city in West Bengal
next to Kolkata and thus, an important trading center. Asansol subdivision
comprises of the entire area from Andal to Barakar, which covers mining regions
of Raniganj, Burnpur, Baraka, Jamuria and Asansol. The history of
the city goes back to the 10th Jain Tiranthankar, Mahavira
Vardhaman, who lived in this region. The district was named after him as
Bardhman. Major influence of Jainism can be seen in this area and old Jain
temples dot the city and surrounding region giving a pious and spiritual feel
to the place. Asansol was later under the rule of the Malla dynasty and part of
the Vishnupur kingdom until the region came under the British rule.
Today, Asansol is a modern city with major mining infrastructure but the
suburbs of the city remain green and clean. The cultural heritage of the bygone
centuries and deep rooted traditions are reflected in the fine handicrafts of
the region. Numerous streams, hot springs
and rivers make it an ecological preserve and home to innumerable varieties of
avian and terrestrial animals.
