On the route to Auli are the confluences (prayags) of various tributaries of River Ganga. In fact, it is at Deoprayag where Bhagirathi and Alaknanda merge to be named the Ganga. Brief stopovers at these prayags - Deoprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnapryag, and Nandprayag - are an absolute must. There is a temple at Joshimath, 16 km away from Auli where the famous Guru Adi Shankaracharya lived in the 8^th century AD. He built a temple here, which still exists.

Auli is a recently developed winter ski resort in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched at an elevation of 2,500 metres, Auli offers a magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges and excellent slopes covered in soft snow meant for skiing. Essentially a small and serene hill-station, Auli offers excellent treks and nature walks to nearby places.

Before Auli was developed as a ski resort, its slopes were the training ground for the ski-equipped personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. Among the legendary peaks surrounding Auli is the 23,490-feet-high Trishul. It was the scene of a unique expedition in 1958 when the mountaineers took four days to climb the peak and only 90 minutes to ski down to the base camp.
