Sightseeing Highlights

The Barmer Fort on top of a hill is replete with history and brings alive the past with its impressive architecture. Barmer is also known for its temples. The finely carved 12th century temple at Kiradu has fine details, the Vishnu Temple of Ranchhriji at Khed has an impressive Garuda on its gate, and the Balark sun temple is another famous pilgrim spot. Nakoda Parasvanath is known for its Jain temple and a fair is held in December-January to celebrate Shri Parasvanathji?s birth.

Other Activities

The handicrafts and traditions of this city make it an excellent place to shop. Barmer is known for its embroidery with mirror work, carved wooden crafts, dyed and hand printed fabrics and carpets or the 'Pattius' dari. Sadar bazaar is a favourite place among visitors for shopping.

Barmer is the desert district of Rajasthan. It traces its origins to Bhada Rao (Bar Rao) the 13th century ruler who founded the city. It is a land of tribal folk who live in very harsh and difficult circumstances, and yet are extremely warm-hearted and welcoming. Barmer?s Bhopas, the priest singers who sing about deities and legendary warriors, and Muslim drummers or dholis, are a treat to hear. The folk art and handicrafts of the region are extremely famous, and are now exported all over the world. A trip to Barmer comes alive if one goes during any of the innumerable festivals and fairs. The Mallinath Cattle Fair at Tilwara is an annual event held in March-April. The fair traces its roots to a local legend Rawal Mallinath. There are bullock, camel and horses races. The Veeratara Mela is another colourful event held thrice a year
