| Sightseeing Highlights
One of the main attractions here is the famous Palolem beach and the village, which is a perfect example of a traditional Goan village. The beach itself is one of the most beautiful beaches in Goa with white sands and long, isolated stretches, surrounded by swaying palms. Another nearby beach that is popular with tourists is Cavelossim, which lies about 11 km south of Colva and offers many facilities including dolphin watching.
You can visit the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, the second largest wildlife reserve in Goa and explore its eight well laid out nature trails. There some spots in and around the sanctuary that are worth a visit, including a tree house overlooking a waterhole.
The Mallikarjun Temple located some 2.5 km from Chaudi is another unique place to visit as the locals come here to seek advice from oracles called the 'kaul'.
Other Activities
Besides the known beaches, Canacona also has about a dozen lesser-known beaches. Vaturem and Xendrem are two of them and are popular with locals. One can visit the Parthagali Math which is a 500 year old temple built in a mixed style. There are other famous temples in Zimbaulim and Fatorpa as well.
Located at the southernmost tip of Goa, the region of Canacona
is known for its picture-postcard locations and beautiful beaches. It
is bounded by the Sahaydri hills of the Western Ghats on one side and
by the Arabian Sea on the other. The
name Canacona is thought to be a derivative of the word Konkan and this
area was once a district of the former Kingdom of Soonda.
Its villages are situated in low-lying areas and are representative of
a strong Indo- Portuguese influence, in the culture, people, food and
lifestyle. Canacona is one part of Goa where the hillocks look out directly into the sea, giving it an interesting geological identity.
