enthralling 12th century Jagannath Temple, rich in Kalinga
style architecture and is 65 mt. high and belongs to the 12th
century. It was built during the reign of Chodaganga Deva.

Chandrabhaga Beach is located near the famous Sun
Temple of Konark in the Puri district of Orissa. This beach is famous for its
isolated solitude and has been serving as a backdrop to the intricate and
exquisite sculptures on the Sun
Temple. This quaint beach
was removed by 2 km. from the famous Sun temple, as it used to flow towards the
sculpted wheels of the Konark temple, which now represents the cultural
identity of Orissa. Konark temple one of the World Heritage Sites, was built by
King Narsimhadev I (1236 -1264 AD.) of Eastern Ganga Dynasty. It symbolizes the
chariot of the Sun God with twelve pairs of finely sculpted wheels drawn
by seven pairs of horses.
With the
dotting casurina trees, rolling waves and long stretches of clean golden sands,
Chandrabhaga beach is considered as one of the best beaches, on the eastern
coast. It is an ideal spot for sun bathing, surfing, swimming and other
exciting water sports. This beach, often marked as the end of the tour to the
famous Konark Sun Temple,
witness to the creation and ruin of the famous temple.
But,
Chandrabhaga beach is not just limited to being just a beach, but is also well
known for the Chandrabhaga Mela, a
seven day fair held to honour the Sun God.
A variety of religious activities and held both on the beach and at the Konark Temple.
It starts in the lunar
month of Magha (January-February). It is celebrated, at the sacred Chandrabhaga
river near the famous Konark
Sun Temple.
Chandrabhaga beach is also interwoven in the legends of Orissa. It is said that
Krishna's son, Samba is supposed to have been
cured from the dreaded disease, leprosy in the nearby pond.
The
proximity to the famous temple combined with the peaceful isolation and clean
sands on this beach has led to Chandrabhaga beach becoming a popular
sightseeing destination.
