Located in the centre of Tami Nadu, Chettinad
is the home of the Nattukottai Chettiars called the Nagarathars who
were and are still today, a prosperous banking and business community.
This entire area is a major tourist spot with its temples, old palatial
buildings, architecture, woodcraft, textiles and delicious cuisine. It
also has a vivid history and culture. The biggest town in Chettinad is called Karaikudi and it is about 90 minutes drive from Madurai.
Sightseeing Highlights:
One of the main attractions of Chettinad
is the huge country homes of the Chettiars. These ancestral houses,
that were built more than 100 years ago, have massive high walled
structures and were decorated with the finest of wood and
craftsmanship. They are packed with imported period furniture,
chandeliers, curios and paintings. Also interesting to see is the Chettinad
museum, which is housed in an old converted house. It showcases the
traditional jewellery, textiles, household implements and utensils, and
all other unique lifestyle products of the Chettiyars. Among temples, the must see is the Meenakshi Sundereshwar temple, that is famous for its unique architecture.

Chettinad region is a cluster of 76 villages which lies in Karaikudi. This Karaikudi village comes under the Sivaganga District and is famous for various sightseeing places. Chettinad village features a wide range of temples including Karpagavinayagar Temple and Athmanathaswamy Temple. These two temples are dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva respectively.
The Lord Ganesha Temple is around 1600 years old and is situated on the Pillayarpatti Street. On the other hand, the Lord Shiva temple belongs to the 10th century and is famous for its mural paintings belonging to the 17th century and 19th century.
Chettinad region is populated by the Chettiar community which has built many Chettiar Clan temples. These Chettiar clan temples are a cluster of nine temples located at Velankudi, Soorakudi, Nemam, Vairavanpatti and others. Chettiar Palace, now converted into a heritage hotel is also a popular landmark of Chettinad. This palace was built by S. A. Ramaswamy Chettiar and it took over a decade for its completion.
Athangudi is a nearby village which is famous for its traditional Athangudi tiles that are made of synthetic oxides, cement, sand and belly jelly. Other popular sightseeing places in Chettinad are Kamban Mani Mandapam, Kaviarsar Kannadhasan Mani Mandapam and Kundrakkudi Murugan Temple. The Shri Koteeswara Kottaiyur Temple and Koviloor Aadheenam are also popular among tourists visiting Chettinad.
