Chilika Lake's
island of Kalijai is a famous pilgrimage centre and devotees throng the temple of Goddess Kalijai.
Don't miss the Island of the Nalabana, specifically for the most astounding
surroundings for watching different varieties of island bird migrations.
The Nirmaljhara Island
is also a special picnic island and a special area of pilgrimage because a
stream emerges from the idol of Lord Vishnu's feet directly. That is considered
very holy and has become a pilgrimage centre in the recent years.

Chilika is a large lagoon with
conglomeration of tiny islands is situated in the Puri district of Orissa. Chilika Lake has been mentioned in ancient texts
as a prominent harbour in the heydays of King of Kalinga. Archaeological and
geological studies have shown that during the Pleistocene era, Chilika Lake was completely submerged under the
sea.
Strategically located on the south of River Mahanadi, Chilika is over 70 km in length and more than 16 km in length and has been classified as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. This world famous Bio diversity Park and wetland is home to more than 200 species of migratory birds and aquatic animals such as strokes, flamingoes and innumerable turtles have made Chilika Lake their permanent home.
Dotted with surrounding islands
such as the Honeymoon Island, the Kalijai Island, the Breakfast Island, the
Nalabana Island of Reeds, the Birds Island, the Parikud Island and the Island
of Kalijai sitting amidst undisturbed serene beauty, within the backdrop of the
distant hill rages, and aquamarine salt water, Chilika has become a sought
after destination amongst tourists from all over the world.
Apart from the significant position
as a natural wetland, Chilika is also known for the numerous ancient temples. Each
island is known for its flora and fauna while temples abound the region. The
most popular is the Temple
of Kalijai, dedicated to
Goddess Kali and during the month of January, Makara Sankranti is celebrated.
