| Sightseeing:
The VOC Park and Zoo, named after the famous freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram, is an amusement park to visit with the family. So is the Agriculture University, designated as one of the best institutions in South Asia, with a great botanical garden spread over an area of 300 hectares. For museum lovers, there is the Forest College Museum, to see the fossil and dead specimens of rare plants and animals.
On the outskirts is the popular Temple of Perur Patteeswara Swamy located 7km west of Coimbatore. Built by King Karikala Cholan, the temple is known for the 'Swayambu Lingam' the idol dedicated to lord Shiva, and the 'Kanaka Saba' or the golden hall, with a gold plated statue of Nataraja.
Excursions:
Visit the Thirumurthy Temple 90km from Coimbatore, located at the foot of Thirumurthy Hills. Also, check out the Crocodile farm nearby at the Amaravathy Dam. Siruvani waterfalls, 40 km west of the city, known for its enchanting beauty and sweet tasting water. And the last but not the least, an ecological paradise called Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, 90km away, and renamed recently as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary.
For weekend getaways, you could visit the hill stations of Ooty (90 km away), Kodaikannal (138 km away) and Coonoor and Kotagiri (70 km away); or if you fancy wildlife the Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary is 67 km away.
Other Activities:
Textiles and readymade garments are the main thing to shop for at Coimbatore. Those with business interests could visit the industrial exhibition, a permanent feature organized in memory of late industrialist G.D. Naidu.
