Animal
Sightings:
Corbett
is most renowned for sightings of the tiger, and large herds of elephants on
the char grassland along the river. Apart from that you can see leopard,
chital, barking deer, ghoral, sambar, wild boar, jungle cat, sloth bear and monkeys.
You could also find the gharial and the marsh crocodile sunning alongside the
river Ramganga.
Activities:
You could
opt for the different Safaris offered, based on your areas of interest. The
Jeep Safari is for covering a large distance while viewing wildlife, while the
recommended Elephant Safari is for viewing animals at close range in the
mornings and evenings. Accompanied by trained guides, you should take the
Nature Guide as a start at the Park. Bird watchers can indulge in their
passion, while anglers can pursue their sport at the fishing camps outside the
reserve forest at Ramnagar. Or you can just enjoy the view of the
landscape and wildlife from the various watchtowers at Dhikala, Phulai and
Jhirna.
There is
also a Museum at the entrance of the Corbett Tiger Reserve, displaying
varied natural and historical exhibits and maps and models of the park.
Chosen in
1973 as the launching point of Project Tiger in India,
it is one of the oldest national parks of the country. The park has seen several
revisions in its name from The Hailey National Park in 1936, to Ramganga National Park in
1952, to finally Corbett
National
Park
in 1957. It has been named in memory of the famous native of the region, Jim
Corbett, who changed from being a legendary hunter to a savior of animals.
Cradled
in the foothills of the Himalayas (Kumaon and Garhwal),
and covering an expanse of 318 sq. km, with the river Ramganga flowing
through it, this park houses a large variety of wildlife, forests, fauna and
flora. It is home to 110 kinds of trees, 51 varied shrubs and more than
33 types of bamboos and grasses. It has a wealth of wildlife, housing 50
species of mammals, around 580 bird species, 25 different kinds of reptiles, in
addition to other small wildlife.
The park is
an environmentalist's delight. The undulating landscape is quite an interesting
mix of depressions that are marshy to ravines and forest to grasslands.
Surrounded by the high ridge of Kanda on the northern side, the park shares its
space with the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, on its west. In addition to
being one of the tiger reserves in India,
it is also a sanctuary for elephants and innumerable birds.
