About Covelong Tourism
Originally, a port strategically built by the Nawab of Carnatic, Saadat Ali, it was later demolished, during the Carnatic War, by Lord Clive. This sleepy village, once a political hub for the Frenchmen, is home to many fishermen.Situated on the Coromondal coast, along the scenic East Coast Road and 40 km from Chennai, it is a well-known haunt for many tourists who want to surf and swim the waves. A canal running parallel to the Bay of Bengal separates Covelong beach, from the mainland and runs all the way from Chennai to Mahabalipuram.
Sightseeing:
The beach brings to mind stories of a bygone era that can be experienced from the ruins of an Old Dutch fort, which has now been converted into a resort. You could also visit the Catholic Church at Covelong. To explore the famous triangle of Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram, head out to Mahabalipuram, the temple town by the seaside. It is 19 km away and houses the famous Shore temples of the Pallava rulers, dating from the 5th - 8th centuries.
