Sightseeing:
The star attraction is the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, the second largest sanctuary in Karnataka. It is a large expanse of dense deciduous forests, with lush vegetation, flowing streams and trekking paths. It is home to almost 200 species of birds and some rare wildlife such as the black panther, flying squirrel, flying snake and slender loris. The entrance to the park is 12 km from the town, at the Kulgi Nature Camp.
A great way to get acquainted with the wildlife is to try the open jeep Safaris accompanied by in-house naturalists. You can also trek with a guide and explore the highlights such as Sykes Point, the highest point in Uttara Kannada district, which gives a captivating view of the backwaters of the famous Supa Dam. While there, don?t miss the 300 ft tall, Syntheri Rock, a monolithic granite rock.
About 25 km away from the town are the Kavala Caves, said to be Lord Shiva?s abode, a mystical adventure by itself. You need to climb a thousand steps and crawl through innumerable, winding and narrow tunnels to finally witness the most magnificent view of a naturally formed gigantic Shivlinga.
Dandelappa temple, is one of the oldest temples in Dandeli town and considered very sacred by the locals, while the Ulavi Channa Basaveshwar Temple is 50 km away.
Other activities:
Apart from wildlife watching, water sports and other outdoor adventures form the main activity here. There several camps and resorts along the Kali which offer white water rafting, coracle rides, kayaking and canoeing. Dandeli is a bird-watcher?s haven, and crocodile spotting is another popular sport, best seen from October to early March.
If you are interested in experiencing tribal living of the Gowlis and the Siddis visit the many adjoining villages, located inside the wildlife sanctuary.
