The earliest known chieftain, who ruled Tagadur during the

northern parts of Salem District were probably under the Pallavas. The region
was variously ruled by the Rashtrakutas, Cholas, Hoysalas and Pandyas. Under
the reign of the valiant Tipu Sultan, the province came under the rule of the
British, a period which saw the district being incorporated into the Salem
District.
