| Sightseeing Highlights
The main attraction here are the archeological ruins including the excavated planned city built according to a geometric design, which is divided into the citadel, the middle town and the lower town. You can see the massive fortification walls rising against the dry landscape. The city was built within these walls in three parts. The archaeologists who excavated the site gave names to these parts - the Acropolis, Middle Town and Lower Town.
You can also visit the Mansar River that bounds Dholavira and have a relaxing rest in between exploring the archeological ruins.
Other Activities
Besides Dholavira, you must take a trip to the Rann of Kutch in the right season and enjoy its amazing scenic splendour and unique wildlife.
Located on the north-west corner of the Khadir Island and surrounded by water in the monsoons, lies the ancient city of Dholavira.
It was discovered from under mounds of earth in the year 1967. These
excavation sites are one of the largest Harappan sites in India, a part of the Indus
valley civilization. The ruins of the settlement found here are
believed to be more than 5,000 years old. The excavations done here
have revealed many ancient artifacts, like seals, beads, animal bones,
gold, silver, terracotta ornaments and vessels. Some of these items are
linked to Mesopotamia, which proves
that it was a major port and trading center of those times. It is
believed that Dholavira is even older than the port city of Lothal. The most fascinating discovery of Dholavira is the large inscription, comprising of ten letters in the Indus script. Each letter has been engraved on slices of crystalline material. |
