Wildlife Highlights
The star
species of this national park is the highly endangered and rare White-winged
wood duck, which people come from far and wide to see in its natural habitat.
Another rare animal to see in the wild is Feral Horses (once-domestic horses
that have gone back to the forests and become a wild species). Other animals of
this sanctuary are hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow loris, water buffalo,
tiger, elephant, Gangetic river dolphin; and birds such as spot-billed pelican,
white-bellied heron, Pallas's fishing eagle, greylag goose, Brahmini duck, bar-headed
goose, pelican, and black stork.
The two
entry points to the park are at Guijan Ghat and Saikhowa Ghat. The forest
department organizes guided safaris within the park, and entry is restricted
before sunrise and after sunset. Dibru-Saikhowa
is famous for being the state?s biggest national park and covers ab over an
area of 650 sq. km. It is close to Tinsukia town, in the district by the same
name. This picturesque forest reserve was created in1986 by merging two smaller
reserve forests, Dibru and Saikhowa. Adding to its scenic beauty is the mighty Brahmaputra river, the Arunachal hills in the north and the
Dibru and Patkai hills in the south. Considered to be among the premium
bio-diversity spots of the world, the dense forests here comprise moist evergreen
and tropical deciduous forest, bamboo, cane and grasslands. Being located on
the flood plains of the Brahmaputra, make it
an extremely fertile region with rich flora and fauna, including several rare
and endangered animals, birds, trees, herbs and plants.
