Apart
from Dindigul Fort, there are many
temples that one can visit in and around the city like the Sri Kalahasteeswarar Sri Gnanambikai temple located in the city
centre, a Hanuman temple that is
adjacent to the fort near the tank and the Samadhi
of Odha Samiyar, the seer who performed many miracles is behind the rock
fort. The soldiers of Hyder Ali at the foot of the mountain installed the deity
of the 200-year-old Sri Kottai Mariamman
Temple. Devotees of the elephant God, Ganesha must visit the Nanmai Tharum Vinayagar (108
Vinayagars), which is quite famous in the city. The Begampur mosque, constructed by Hyder Ali is a major mosque in
Dindigul. The beautiful St.Joseph Church
is headquarters of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dindigul. The 300-year-old St.Antony's Shrine at Marambady is the

Excursions:
A
short drive out of Dindigul will take you to several beautiful temples such as
the Sri Soundaraja Perumal temple at Thadikombu
that is well known for its sculptures. Worshipping at the Soundararaja Perumal
Koil at Thadikombu is considered to be auspicious for students. The Dhandayuthapani Temple,
the Murugan temple at Thirumalaikeni,
the Abirami Amman temple, Raja
Kaliamman Temple
at Thethupatti, the Kasavai Mouna
Nirvaana Swamighal Aaalayam (God of silence) are other important temples which
attracts many pilgrims.
Peranai and Sirumalai
hills are two fine picnic spots in the vicinity of the town.
Shopping:
The
town is famed for its iron locks that are exported to other countries and for
its Leather Tanning and Textile spinning industries. Chinnalapatti, which is
located 11 km from Dindigul on the Madurai-Dindigul road, is known for its
flourishing handloom industry and one can find Art Silk Sarees and the famous
Chinnalapatti Sarees here. Dindigul is known for its cigars too. While you are
at Dindigul, you should check out Vani Vilas, which is famous for its coffee.
Festivals:
Lakhs
of devotees visit St. Anthony's shrine every year on the 16, 17 & 18th of
January- the feast day of St. Anthony the Hermit and experience miracles.
Known
as "The City of Locks and Tannery", Dindigul is a fast growing tier-4
city in Tamil Nadu, India.
The city of Dindigul is 130 km from Coimbatore and is the
administrative headquarters of Dindigul district.
The
Dindigul Fort, constructed on a huge rock about 280 ft height is one of the
major landmarks of the city is visible from several kilometres. The fort looks
like Pillow ('Dhindu'), when viewed from southeast gives the name to the city.
The Dindigul Fort built by the Nayaks of Madurai, played a pivotal role in the
history of Dindigul because of its strategic location. Dindigul and the fort
figured prominently in the military operations of succeeding dynasties of the
Wodeyars of Mysore, Marathas, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan till it was captured by
the British Empire.
