Known
as "The City of Locks and Tannery", Dindigul is a fast growing tier-4
city in Tamil Nadu, India.
The city of Dindigul is 130 km from Coimbatore and is the
administrative headquarters of Dindigul district.
The
Dindigul Fort, constructed on a huge rock about 280 ft height is one of the
major landmarks of the city is visible from several kilometres. The fort looks
like Pillow ('Dhindu'), when viewed from southeast gives the name to the city.
The Dindigul Fort built by the Nayaks of Madurai, played a pivotal role in the
history of Dindigul because of its strategic location. Dindigul and the fort
figured prominently in the military operations of succeeding dynasties of the
Wodeyars of Mysore, Marathas, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan till it was captured by
the British Empire.
