Highlights
Juna Mahal is a 13th century seven-storied
structure that resembles a fortress with bastions, turrets, narrow entrances
and corridors. The splendid interiors embellished with beautiful frescoes,
miniature paintings and glass and mirror work, make it an impressive creation.
One requires prior permission of the resident royal family to visit the Palace.
A famous shrine of
Shrinathji lies on the banks of the Gaib
Sagar Lake. The shrine is a collection of several small temples with one
main temple. The Vijay
Raj Rajeshwar
Temple, dedicated to Lord
Shiva is an architectural splendour and a fine example of craftsmanship of the
sculptors of Dungarpur.
The State
Archaeological Museum houses a fine collection of sculptures and statues.
Baroda village (41Km) is famed for its beautiful white
stone Shiva temple, and the Jain temple with beautifully carved images of the twenty-four
Tirthankaras.
Bhuvaneshwar Temple (9 km) dedicated to Lord Shiva is also where a fair is
held after Holi. Deo Somnath (24 km) has a 12th century white
stone Shiva temple with turrets.
Galiyakot village (58 km), capital of Parmars is where the shrine of
Sayed Fakhruddin is located. The annual Urs brings thousands of devotees. Dungarpur is at the foot hills of the Aravallis and was once
home to the Bhil tribe. In 1282 AD, Rajput king Rawal Veer Singh assassinated Dungaria,
the Bhil Chieftain and took over the land. Dungarpur lies in southern
Rajasthan, between Banswara and Udaipur
districts and has rivers Mahi and Som flowing through it. The area is rich in
forests and wildlife. It is the seat of the elder branch of the Sisodiya clan
called the Maharawals who are descendents of Bappa Rawal. Dungarpur is famous for its palatial residences decorated
with stone jharokhas (balconies), built in a unique style developed during the 18th
century under Maharawal Shiv Singh. The artisans of this region make beautiful
lacquer painted toys and picture frames. Visit this place during Holi to see
the colourful Gair dance of the
Bhils. At the Baneshwar Fair held
during Magh Shukla Purnima in February, Bhil pilgrims come for a sacred dip in
the Mahi and Som rivers. The famous Bar
Bij Fair of this area is held after Diwali and also attracts many vistors.
