| About Elephanta Caves Tourism |
Located about 10 kms from the Gateway of India or 9 nautical miles into the sea, are the famous Elephanta Caves, which are a great tourist attraction. It is about an hour?s ferry ride away. They are also known as Gharapuri and were named Elephanta caves
by the Portuguese, after the statue of an elephant near the landing
area of the island. The entire cave temple complex covers an area of
about 60,000 square feet and it consists of a main chamber and two
lateral ones, courtyards and several subsidiary shrines. There are
regular excursions to these caves every day from the Gateway of India.
Sightseeing Highlights:
Though the entire complex has a number of things to see, one of the main sights here is the Maheshamurti cave in which Lord Shiva is shown as a creator, protector and destroyer |

Not a great trip!!
| Overview of the destinationElephanta Caves is an over-rated tourist destination 1hr away from Mumbai by a ferry which you need to take from the Gateway Of India. They Food, sight-seeing and shopping There are two canons on the Canon Hill which is pretty cool also you get a breathtaking view from there..
There are a couple of restaurants Activities & things to do You can walk around have a look at the caves..Check out the canon hills..That's about it... Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc. Please make sure you don't travel during the monsoons because the sea gets rough and the ferry services are discontinued till monsoon gets over..However some |  VRV, Mumbai | 20th August 2008
