Situated
in the extreme north of Tamil Nadu, Erode is a modern city with strong
traditional ties. A long undulating plain gently sloping towards the river
Cauvery in the southeast marks the topography here. The three major tributaries
of river Cauvery viz. Bhavani, Noyyal and Amaravathi drain the long stretch of
mountains in the north.
Erode
is an important market centre for turmeric. Being in a cotton-growing region,
Erode is the marketing hub of handloom, power loom and readymade garments with
textile products such as cotton sarees, bed spreads, carpets, lungies, printed
fabrics, towels and dhotis being exported in bulk.
The
Coimbatore and
Erode districts together formed part of ancient "Kongu Nadu" which
dates back to the Sangam era. In the early days, the Kosar tribe was the
prominent tribe in these parts who were then followed by succeeding dynasties
of Rashtrakutas, Cholas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Madurai Sultanate, and
Vijaya Nagar rulers, Madurai Nayakas, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore till
it was ceded to the British Empire by the Maharaja of Mysore.
