Highlights
The Gajner palace is a mix of both Rajput
and Mughal architecture. There is an ancient temple in the palace premises.
Thousands of devotees gather at the holy dargah
in the palace grounds during the Urs festival.
The old railway station where dignitaries alighted during
colonial times still maintains a railway siding in Bikaner, with the old platform and antique
lamp posts in tact. It is a colonial remnant worth seeing.
The 16th
century impregnable Junagarh Fort (36 Kms) built by Raja Rai Singh has about 37
palaces, pavilions and temples inside it. Sadul Museum
in the Lalgarh Palace
has a very large collection of old pictures of Bikaner State
and royal memorabilia.
The famous Deshnook Temple
enroute to Jodhpur
is dedicated to Karni Mata. Devi Kund
Sagar (32 km) has royal chattris (cenotaphs). The chattri of Maharaja Surat
Singh is a beauty in white marble with the ceiling is studded with Bikaneri
paintings.
A visit to the
ancient temple town Kolayat (20 km)
brings you to the Kolayatji
Temple dedicated to Kapil
Muni. An annual fair is held in the month of Kartik when pilgrims throng the
place to bathe in the holy Kolayat
Lake. Kodamdeshar Temple
on way to Jaisalmer is dedicated to Lord Bhairavnath. This temple is known for
not having a roof; it is said that many attempts to make one failed.
Gajner is
30 km from Bikaner in the Thar
Desert. It is famous for its 6, 000-acre red sandstone palace
built by Maharaja Ganga Singhji of Bikaner. It is located on the banks of a
picturesque lake rich with a variety of wildlife and vegetation. Built as a
hunting lodge and summer resort in early 20th century, the Gajner Lake
attracts migratory birds in winters, and animals like nilgais, chinkaras and deer.
Gajner has the only Camel breeding farm in Asia where you can experience farm life at close quarters
in the afternoons when it is open to the public. You can also go on camel
safaris on the sand dunes. Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is home
to a variety of wild animals and birds.
