Located 27 km from Ahmedabad, at a height of 3,660 feet above sea level and amidst the lush green Gir forest, Girnar
is known as a holy place and important pilgrimage for both Hindus and
Jains. There are a number of temples located here, which have famously
converted it into a township of temples. The Girnar
Hills are a collection of five hills and on each of its five peaks are
five Jain temples built in the 12th century. One has to climb 4000
steps to reach the top. There is also a big mosque here that attracts
many Muslim pilgrims, and is a popular pilgrim spot for childless women
seeking blessings.
Sightseeing Highlights
All the Jain temples dedicated to the Tirthankars are a must see. But the Neminath temple
is the main one, made of black marble, and adorned with exquisitely
carved sculptures and engravings. This temple attracts the maximum
number of devotees. There are also the temple of Abhinandan Prabhu built by King Kumar Pal, the templeof the thousand-hooded Parshwanath and the Goddess Ambe temple which is visited by newly married couples, praying for good fortune and a prosperous married life.
