Sight-seeing highlights
Haflong Lake is one of the chief tourist attractions of the
area. This large and beautiful water body is a popular spot for picnics and
boating. It attracts hundreds of migratory birds and ducks in winter. Close-by
is a hot-water spring called Garampani,
which also attracts many visitors. About 9 km away is Jatinga village which shot into the limelight due to the mysterious
phenomenon of birds dashing against petromax and other lanterns placed by
villagers, to commit mass suicide. Tourists visit this village at night to
witness this strange happening. You can
drive to the picturesque town of Maibong on the
banks of the river Mahur, 47 km away, which is the administrative headquarters
of North Cachar Hills District. The city has a rich heritage as it was the
capital of the Kachar kingdom from the 16th to 18th century. You can explore
ruins of the ancient kingdom on the eastern banks of the river, as well as
visit the 12th century Ramchandi Temple
carved out of a single rock.
Other Activities
Haflong is
a haven for adventure sports - you can enjoy para-gliding and trekking on
the green and picturesque slopes.Haflong is a beautiful hill-station in Assam,
at an altitude of 680 m above sea level. It is about 85 km north of Silchar and
345 km from Guwahati. The scenic beauty here is astounding with the misty blue
mountains, fast-flowing rivers and streams, dense green vegetation and rare
species of orchids, butterflies and birds. The town itself is centred around a
picturesque lake, and there are orchards of pineapple and oranges all around.
Haflong is also known by locals as the land of blue hills. The people living
here are the Himar, Mizo and Naga tribes. Haflong is close to Jatinga, the
famous spot where thousands of birds commit suicide by dashing against lights
placed by local villagers. Much has been written about this mysterious
phenomenon, but no scientific explanation has been given as yet. Of late,
Haflong is also offering adventure sports such as para-gliding to tourists. |
