architectural enthusiasts and pilgrims alike, a trip to Haveri entails
mandatory visits to the many famous temples
- Tarakeshwar at Hanagal, Kadambeshwar at Rattihalli, Someshwar at Haralahalli, Nagareshwar at Bankapur, Mukteshwar at Choudapur, Siddhesvara at Haveri and numerous
others. The recently constructed mini
Vidhana Soudha, housing the major government offices, also draws a large
number of tourists. The Bankapura peacock sanctuary is home to more than a 1000 peacocks not to mention
other birds like wood pecker, great-horned owl, babbler, magpie, robin etc.
For the spiritually inclined, a stop at the famous Hukkeri Math is advised.

the middle of the state, Haveri District is the focal point of Karnataka's art
and culture. It is well known for the architectural splendour of its temples dating
back to the Chalukyas & Rastrakutas. Over 1300 stone inscriptions of these
rulers are found all over the district. Stone carvings depicting Stone Age
civilizations are found in many parts of the district. It is also famous for being
the birthplace of Santa Shishunala Sharif, the great saint
Kanakadasaru, Sarvagnya and
many others. The city of Haveri is the
administrative headquarters of the district & itself boasts of a national
monument in the form of the Siddesvara
Temple.
Strategically
located 335 km from the capital city of Bangalore, Haveri (derived from the
Kannada words "havu" and "keri", which means "place of
snakes") is enclosed between Dharwad district on the north, Gadag district
on the northeast, Bellary district on the east, Davangere district on the
south, Shimoga district on the southwest and by Uttar Kannada on the west and
northwest, respectively.
Haveri is also
famous for its Byadagi red chillies, cardamom garlands, cattle markets, oil
mills and cotton markets. The district itself has over five national monuments
& comes under the core area of Western Chalukya
architectural activity.
