Two wooden (Jora) bridges (Sanko)
span a small stream after which is named the famous neighbourhood of Jorasanko
in north Kolkata.
Jorasanko prides itself on its
world famous landmark of Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the distinguished home of the
Tagore family. The City of Joy
cannot be envisaged without the great Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore whose
influence still pervades the city. Prince Dwarakanath Tagore, the grandfather
of Rabindranath Tagore, constructed the famous Jorasanko Thakur Bari in the
18th century.
Jorasanko Thakurbari now houses a
museum with a fabulous collection of Abanindranath and Rabindranath Tagore's
works. The Rabindra
Bharati University
was set up here as a centre for music and fine arts, but has now diversified
into the Arts and Humanities as well.
A beautiful sound and light show
in Bengali showcases the highlights of this heritage building and its famous
residents.
Jorasanko was also home to
several other great luminaries of Bengali Culture, earning it its title of "the
cradle of Bengal Renaissance". The area is a cultural hub and comprises of
several noteworthy institutions such as the Adi Brahmo Samaj, the Jorasanko
Bharati Natya Samaj, the Kalikata Haribhakti Pradayani Sabha, the Minerva
Library and the Oriental Seminary. The area is a veritable pilgrimage for
culture buffs. |
