Sightseeing Highlights:
The high point of the journey is the Kora or the Parikrama which takes around six days. The path around Mt. Kailash is 52 Km long and is covered on foot or pony. The dome-shaped conical summit of Mt. Kailash rises majestically over all the neighbouring peaks. The southern sapphire face and brown-red base of the peak is best viewed from Tarchen. Tarchen is the point from where the parikrama begins and ends. Mansarovar Lake beneath Mt. Kailash is breathtakingly beautiful with its turquoise blue waters. To the west of Mansarovar lies yet another lake, Rakshash Tal or Ravan Kund. The distance between the two lakes is 10 km. A natural channel, Ganga Chu connects both the freshwater lakes. Yet another lake, Gauri Kund is near Dolma Pass, the highest point of the trek route to Mt. Kailash.
Activities:
The 52 Km trek is perhaps the most difficult of treks in spine-chilling cold. The trail on the northern side rises up to Dolma Pass, the highest point on the trek and then descends rapidly into the Lham Chhu Khyer valley before terminating at Tarchen. Mansarovar parikrama takes around three days and is less steep, mostly on flat grounds. Starting from the village Huore, the trail passes through untouched landscapes and ends at Chugu or the Trugo monastery. The next stretch covers Tseti Lake and blackened caves en route. The northern shore is usually avoided due to marshes and tough cliffs.

At the foot of the mountain is the Mansarovar Lake, where a holy dip is said to ensure moksha or freedom from re-birth. The lake is the source of four great rivers - Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali (Nepal).
Kailash Mansarovar is in the western part of the Tibetan Himalayas at an altitude of 6,714 m. The
Kailash Mansarovar yatra or journey takes around 30 days of combined
travel by bus or jeep, and then by foot. The journey is along the fixed
route chosen by the Indian and Tibetan governments and bookings have to
be made with the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam. Another way is to fly to Kathmandu,
and then drive to Mansarovar - this is a relatively easy route. A
quick, but very expensive way of doing the trip is to book a 9 or 12
day helicopter tour. |
