Some of the other attractions include Coringa, which is the home of the salt-water crocodile and Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuary (50km away) located on the Eastern Ghats.
Adurru (130 km) is an ancient Buddhist centre. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India have unearthed remains of stupas, chaityas and viharas. Most important is the Mahastupa built like a giant wheel, 17 feet in diameter, placed on a raised platform.
For some modern sightseeing, you can also visit the Rajahmundry Bridge and Andhra paper mills.
There are also a number of temples in and around this place. Some of them are Kukkuteswara Temple at Pitahpuram, Sri Sathya Narayana Swamy Temple at Annavaram and the Sri Jagan Mohini Chennakesava Swamy Temple at Ryali.
Located in the East Godavari District, Kakinada is a pilgrimage centre in Andhra Pradesh. The name of the town was originally 'Kaki Nandivada', so named after the Nandi kings of Rajahmundry. Over the years, it came to be called Kakinada. The first settlers in this picturesque coastal, port town were the Dutch, followed by the British. |
