| About Kargil Tourism |
|
Kargil, the second
largest township in Ladakh region, in the state of Jammu
and Kashmir, is nestled deep inside the Himalayan mountains and is
on the border of India and Pakistan. As
a whole, the district of Kargil is widely spread over an area of 14,086 Km. with
a national highway running directly through the Kargil area. This highway is
only open during the months of June through November because of the extreme
amounts of snow that falls in the Zojila
Pass during the harsh
winter months.
The origin of the name Kargil is
thought to have come from the combined words of 'Khar' and 'rKil', with the
Khar portion being defined as standing for the term of Castle, and rKil stands
for the center. When the two words are combined, it means the spot that is in
between two castles. This is fitting for Kargil because the district is actually
located between the two countries.
