One of the most historical districts of Haryana is the city of Karnal, and is also known as the city of 'Daanveer Karn'. The city district of Karnal is located on the western banks of Yamuna River and flows approximately 11 km. toward the east. The river also separates the state boundaries of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The Karnal town was established by Raja Karna, step brother of the Pandavs as mentioned in the Mahabharata. It came into prominence in 1739, with the defeat of Mohammad Shah by Nadir Shah.It is about 125 km. from both the cities of Delhi and Chandigarh and has a unique amalgamated culture. In the Karnal district, the popular artificial lake, Karnal Lake with a beautiful island set amidst the lake, is a natural paradise. This island is filled with a wide variety of foliage, and it is the home to many varieties of birds, including geese, swans, cormorant, ducks and even kingfishers.
