| About Karnala Tourism |
Karnala is located about 120 km from Pune and 13 km from Panvel. Surrounded by the Western Ghats, Karnala
is dominated by a fort, which rises up from the sanctuary at its base.
The sanctuary is around 82 ft high from the sea level. On a clear day,
the Mumbai
coastline, 30 km away is clearly visible from the peak of the fort. To
the east of the fort, on the bank of the River Patalganga, is village
Apte, on the west is Ransai while on the north is Vichwan. The whole
area is lush green and rich with natural habitation of various birds. Karnala is a bird watcher's paradise.
Sightseeing Highlights:
Explore the Karnala Fort dating back to the 12th century. It was captured by Shivaji from the original Nizamshahi rulers, and later occupied by the British. The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is one of the most famous in the Bombay
region. It is home to many endangered species of birds such as the
peregrine falcon, king vulture and the crested serpent eagle. Other
birds you can see are the paradise flycatcher, magpie robin, Malabar
whistling thrush, racket-tailed drongo, ashy minivet, red-breasted
flycatcher, and many others.
