Karur,
today is world famous for its top quality handloom made-ups. This historically
significant town is situated on the banks of River Amaravati.
It is one of the oldest cities in Tamil Nadu and has played a significant role
in the history and culture of the Tamils.
Epigraphical, numismatic, archaeological and literary evidence have chronicled
Karur as the capital of early Chera kings of Sangam age. Its history dates back
over 2000 years, when it was a flourishing trading centre in the early Sangam
days and was called Karuvoor or Vanji. It was subsequently ruled by the Cheras,
Gangas,
Cholas,
the Vijayanagar
Nayaks, Mysore
and the British.
Archaeological
excavations undertaken in Karur have unearthed a plethora of rare findings
including mat-designed pottery, bricks, mud-toys, Roman
coins, Chera and Pallava coins, Roman Amphorae,
rare rings, etc. Karur may have been the center for old jewellery-making and
gem-setting.
Karur
is famous for its home textiles. Leading retail chains like WalMart, Target,
IKEA etc source their home products from here. Karur has a niche in five major
product groups bed linens, kitchen linens, toilet linens, table linens and
wall hangings. Allied industries like ginning and spinning mills, dyeing
factories, weaving etc employs around 300,000 people in and around Karur.

Chettinad cement are based in Karur. Karur is a hub for bus body building
industries and is the hometown of India's oldest private scheduled
banks, The Karur Vysya
Bank and Bank. The Karur belt also produces some very good Cats
eyes, Feldspar, Moonstones, Aquamarines, Quarts, Sapphires, Jasper and beryls.
Karur
is well connected by a good network of bus and rail services.
