| Sightseeing Highlights:
Undoubtedly Sun Temple is the chief highlight of Konark. The temple is in the form of a huge chariot with 12 pairs of wheels (one for each month), 10 feet in diameter. The chariot is pulled by 7 horses. Two lions guard the entrance and a flight of steps lead to the main entrance. The temple has a three-tiered pyramidal roof topped by a beautiful spire. From erotic images indicating sublimation of human love in several forms to scenes from civic and court life and war are sculptured with great precision on the black stone.
The remaining two of the 22 subsidiary temples in the main complex include the Vaishnadevi Temple and the Mayadevi Temple. The Archaeological Museum outside the Sun Temple houses many sculptures and carvings found during the temple excavations. Konark Beach lies 3 Km away from the temple and offers stunning sunset views. Just 8 Km away from Konark is Kuruma, a Buddhist site where antique images of Buddha have been excavated. Astranga, a fishing harbour 55 Km from Konark is known for its scenic beauty and glorious sunsets.
Other Activities:
The local markets of Konark have stalls selling sculptures and decorative pieces of art made of stone, horn and wood. Another must-purchase from this town are Patta paintings, the famous applique work of Pipli and brightly embroidered umbrellas and wall-hangings. There are government emporiums as well as private shops to pick these souvenirs.
Chandrabhaga Beach or the Konark Beach is one of the finest beaches in India and one can spend hours enjoying the serene atmosphere, although swimming is not safe here due to high currents. In the month of December, you can witness the celebrated Konark Dance Festival where eminent Indian classical dancers perform in the spellbinding backdrop of the Sun Temple. The festival held in an open theatre is a feast for the eyes.

The small beach town of Konark is synonymous with the Sun Temple
or the Black Pagoda as it was called by the European sailors. Renowned
for its unique architectural design and intricate sculpture, the temple
is a UNESCO world heritage site. Built by King Langula Narasimha Deva
in 13th century AD, the temple took 12 years and 1200 masons to complete.
A smooth ride along Marine Drive will bring you to this magnificent black stone temple. Konark derives its name from Konarka, the presiding deity of the Sun Temple. Kona is corner and Arka
is sun; which means sun around the corner. The highlight of this temple
is that the first rays of the sun always fall inside the temple. Partly
in ruins, the Black Pagoda epitomises Oriya temple architecture with
its gigantic size, intricate stone work and diversified themes. |
