Beautiful Krishnagiri district is gifted with black granite hillocks and lies at an altitude of 1000 m from sea level. The picturesque region has hills and valleys with natural scenic beauty by way of waterfalls, ponds and lakes, reservoirs, historical forts and other monuments. The town has profited much from its proximity to the industrialized city of Bangalore.

Archaeological sources confirm the presence of habitation during the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Mesolithic Ages. There was a tradition of erecting memorial stones for heroes since the Sangam age. These memorial stones speak volumes about the valour and virtues of the people. Krishnagiri was ruled by the Pallavas, Gangas, Nulambas, Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijaya Nagar Emperors, Bijapur Sultans, Wodeyars of Mysore and Nayaks of Madurai. The Twelve Forts in this region were popularly known as the 'Bara Mahal' Forts. The majestic fort built on the Krishnagiri hill by the Vijayanagar Emperors stands even today.
