Highlights
The Krishnanagar Palace
or Rajbari is a landmark of the city and people collect here to celebrate
festivals throughout the year. It is famous for hosting the 'Jhulan Mela' in
the months of July and August and also for observing Holi or Dol that is
celebrated over 12 days in the months of March or April. The palace also has a
temple dedicated to Goddess Durga in the central courtyard and Durga Puja is
observed here each year.
The city's Roman Catholic Church is known for its sculptures and architectural
grandeur. It has on display scenes of Jesus Christ's life etched in canvas and
other wooden murals made by artists from Italy. Among other attractions are
College Bhavan, Krishna Nagar Academy,
the Public Library and the Protestant
Church.
Mayapur is the headquarters of ISKCON and can be reached by a ferry ride across
the Bhagirathi river from Nabadwip. The temple is well worth visiting and it
attracts hundreds of worshippers each day.
Nabadwip on the banks of the Bhagirathi
River is the birthplace
of the great social reformer and saint Sri Chaitanya who lived here in the 15th
century. It is the centre of Vaishnav culture in Bengal
and is an ancient seat of Sanskrit studies. The temple here is called Sonargouranga,
and has a golden statue of Sri Chaitanya. There are also many smaller temples
in the vicinity.

Krishnanagar is famous for its unique
Bengali sweets made by the local' Moyras' (sweet makers) Be sure to taste the delicacies
like 'Sarbhaja' and 'Sarpuriya' which are the most popular sweets here.
About- Krishnanagar
Krishnanagar is the administrative
headquarters of Nadia district, known to be the land
of Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the
great religious reformer of Bengal. The city
was named Krishnanagar in honour of its founder, Raja Krishnachandra, who was a
great patron of art and culture. Situated south of the Jalangi River
it is just 118 km from Kolkata and connected to it by local train. Krishnanagar
is famous for the three religious spots of Nabadwip, Shantipur and Mayapur that
are nearby. Nadia district is mainly agricultural in nature, and sugar milling
is the main industry here. Ghurni, a suburb of Krishnanagar is famous for its
coloured clay figures, animals, fruits and vegetables, which has become an art
form of Bengal. Sanskrit teaching is a unique
tradition of the district. Krishnanagar is well connected by road to different
parts of the state, and also has a railway junction.
