Sightseeing Highlights:

Raghunath Temple holds prime importance among locals as well as tourists. Dedicated to Lord Rama, this temple was built in 1660 by Raja Jagat Singh. Sultanpur Palace in Kullu has miniature paintings and artefacts of ancient times. Jagannath Devi Temple is reached after an hour's hiking but offers glorious views of the region. Bijli Mahadev Temple located at a height of 2640 m is 11 Km from the town. Legend has it that the shiv lingam inside the temple is shattered every time there is lightning and the priests bind it with clarified butter or ghee. About 45 Km from Kullu is Manikaran famous for its natural hot springs. Basheshwar Mahadev Temple is 15 Km from Kullu and is known for its beautiful carvings.

Other Activities:

Kullu region offers varied adventure activities. River rafting can be done on the downstream Beas River from Pirdi to Jhiri. This 16 Km long trek has different grades of rapids. The designated areas for trout fishing include Katrain, Raison, Kasol and Naggar; along the river Tirthan near Larji, in the Sainj Valley; and in the Hurla Khud.

Several treks lead from Kullu Valley to Lahaul Spiti, Zanskar and Kangra. In winters, Solang Valley 13 Km from Kullu offers good skiing. In October, Kullu celebrates a week-long Dussehra Festival marked by cultural festivals, folk shows and exhibitions. Shopping spots include Akhara Bazaar which has a row of emporiums selling everything from the famous Kullu shawls and caps to wooden handicrafts, woollen blankets and rugs. Sultanpur Market is the place to shop for local jewellery while Tibetan markets sell antiques and imported goods.

The city of Kullu nestles in the 'Valley of Gods', situated on the banks of River Beas at an altitude of 1230 m. Its main attraction is the scenic surroundings - green carpeted hills, sparkling rivers, tall deodar forests, apple orchards and uninterrupted views of the Himalayan snow-peaks. Kullu's history can be traced back to 1st century AD when Behangamani Pal, a native of Tripura founded the settlement here. Besides being blessed with abundant natural beauty, Kullu offers an excellent base for adventure sports. Although the more famous Manali becomes the final destination for the tourists, Kullu has its fair share of attractions.
