About Kumbakonam Tourism
Kumbakonam, known as the temple city
of South India is in the Thanjavur district of
Tamil Nadu. The Mahamaham festival that is celebrated once in 12 years is
steeped in history and makes Kumbakonam a pilgrim hotspot, when the festival
comes around. It is one of the oldest towns in Tamil Nadu and once served as
the capital of the Cholas (a Kingdom or Dynasty) in the 7th Century.
It is located amidst the banks of two rivers, the Kaveri and Arasalar. The
extremely large number of temples within the town and the nearby areas give
Kumbakonam its title of ?the temple
city?.
The Chola Dynasty which came to rule the area between the
9th and 13th centuries contributed vastly to the rich
cultural heritage of the region in the forms of religion, literature and
exquisite artwork which is evident in the temples all around Thanjavur. Their kingdom
spread from the Maldives
all the way till Andhra Pradesh. Majestic temples and sculptures in stone and
bronze were hallmarks of the Chola Dynasty that still remain today. The
contribution of the Imperial Cholas (850 -1200 A.D) is known as the Golden Age
of Tamil culture because of their contribution to Tamil literature.
Kumbakonam is a market town for surrounding agricultural
villages and is famous for betel leaves, which is a popular crop in the region.
