The most famous attraction here is the Kundeswara temple, with its intricate Dravidian style of architecture. Another popular destination is the Sri Vinayaka Temple and Mahalingeshwara temple situated at Kumbhashi Anegudde.
You can also visit the Mekekattu Nadhikeshwara temple, near Barkuru Chowlikere temple said to be created by Sage Parashurama. Other temples in the vicinity are, Hattiangadi, Koteshwara and Kirimanjeshwara temples set amidst picturesque locations. Visit the centuries old Holy Rosary Church with stained glass windows, which have stood the ravages of time. Another must see is Hoovinakere, the birthplace of Dvaita philosopher Vadiraja. Basrur has many temples located on the banks of the River Varahi.
Other Activities
For excursions and boating, visit Gangolli where the Haladi River meets the Arabian Sea creating clear backwaters, against the highest peak of the region, Kodachadri.
Another beautiful place to explore is Uppinakudru or Salt Island, 65 km from Kundapura, where you can enjoy boating and other water sports.
Kodi Beach, 4 km from Kundapur is a virgin beach with white sands and aquamarine blue waters. View the breathtaking sunsets at Ottinere, near Byndoor village. Kundapur is a large town in the Udipi district of Karnataka. It is the headquarters of Kundapur taluk and is situated 36 km from Udipi.
The origin of the name is traced back to the Kundeshvara temple, near
the River Panchgangavalli. The name is apt as 'Kunda' also means
jasmine and Kundapur has an abundance of jasmine trees.
Historically
rich, the taluk was the main port during the reign of Rajas of Baindoor
who came into power after the decline of the Vijayanagar kingdom.
Surrounded by water on three sides - Arabian sea,
and the rivers Panchgangavalli and Haladi, Kundapur has palm fringed
river banks and backwaters. Basically a temple town it has now
developed more tourism avenues and has become a popular destination. |
