Kurukshetra
town is the headquarters of the district of the same name in Haryana state, and
lies about 160 km. north of Delhi.
Kurukshetra is a place of great significance to Hindus, as it is believed that
the great Mahabharata took place here. It was in the Kurukshetra
battlegroundthat Bhagavat Gita, one of
the holiest among the Hindu scriptures, was narrated.
In fact, the
Bhagawat Gita starts with a mention to this place, which is described as a
Dharmakshetra or the centre of justice and righteousness. The ancient city of Kurukshetra has a variety of places that hold
historical interest and religious importance. To start with, there are about
360 tirthas or holy waters that include lakes, tanks and wells.
The Prithudaka or Prithu's pool is of great significance, and dates back
to the time of the Rig Veda, in which it is mentioned that the king Prithu,
after performing funeral ceremonies of his father, offered water to all
visitors on the banks of the Saraswati river for 12 days. This sacred place has
two tanks dedicated to Lord Brahma and his consort Saraswati.
A
plethora of archaeological sites and ancient temples mark the district of
Kurukshetra. Archaeological
excavations have found origins of the city going back to
pre-Harrapan eras and one of the historical sites of importance is the
famed 'Raja Karan Ka Tila'. While excavating archaeologist found
numerous things such
as terracotta shards, earthen pot, glazed pottery and Painted Grey
ware.
With
increasing tourists and devotees coming to Kurukshetra, it has become an
